TAWANDA CHARI
The lyrical themes revolve around presumably what his general life(style) and personal understanding of the hip hop culture in the “trap” are like.
Perhaps, unlike actual Southern American trap houses where narcotics [and the attendant ‘vices’] are sold, the term “trap” in our context refers to acquiring wealth, women, flashy vehicles, substances — the depiction of general life experiences that young people face in the ghettos.
The American influence is palpably manifest in his production. The project oozes a smorgasbord of multilayered, thin-textured monophonic drones with sometimes a melodic touch expressed with synthesizers; crisp and rhythmic snares, deep 808s (drums) and triple-time hi-hats.
Inspired by the likes of Mike Dean, Wondagurl & Eestbound, to name a few, Roy August has dark baselines accompanied by hard drums and futuristic melodies.
On the overall, it’s an entertaining project and easy on ear that points to potential excellent replay value. Something one wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to other fellow human beings.
We love the sonic aesthetic.
