The Chevrons have left it for the final match against Scotland in order to qualify for the World Cup as they were humbled by nine wickets by Sri Lanka in a one-sided Super Six encounter in Bulawayo at Queens Sports Club.
Sri Lanka secured their spot following the win. Sri Lanka's bowling line-up, which has been tremendous throughout the tournament, stifled Zimbabwe's batters; the latter who have been in top form as well. Dilshan Madhushanka took the top 3 wickets.
Joylord Gumbie went out for a duck (0), Wessly Madhevere for one and skipper Craig Ervine for just 14. The Chevrons were in utter disarray at 30-3.
Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza combined to put a 60-run partnership for the fourth wicket before Raza was removed by the golden arm of Dasun Shanaka at 30.
In came Maheesh Theekshana who got the all important wicket of Sean Williams soon after he got to his 50.
He bowled Ryan Burl who was threatening to accelerate the scores; and trapped Luke Jongwe leg before wicket. He bowled Blessing Muzarabani to round up a fantastic bowling display bowling Zimbabwe out for 165. Such was his terrific display.
Sri Lanka, led by Pathum Nissanka's hundred, made the light work of the chase.
The only blemish in their innings was the loss of fellow opener Dimuth Karunaratne off the bowling of Richard Ngarava.
Sri Lanka are the first team to seal their spot at the next Cricket World Cup. At the same time, Zimbabwe have to defeat Scotland to qualify for the prestigious tournament.
Scotland have been in an imperious form, having defeated favorites West Indies. The latter have already failed to seal their spot for the next Cricket World Cup.
