TAKUDZWA HILLARY CHIWANZA
The National Prosecuting Authority has dropped its charges against the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator Maureen Kademaunga, saying that there is insufficient evidence to prosecute.
Kademaunga, 38, was arrested on Tuesday on charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property. She was arrested alongside Harare Ward 10 councillor Clayd Mashozhera, 49, and one Daudi Jessub, 40.
CCC said that the arrest was premised on trumped up charges, adding that this mirrored "heightened repression" against the party.
Harrison Nkomo, Kademaunga's lawyer, said that there was no "iota of evidence" for the NPA to proceed with prosecution.
"The Prosecutor General looked at the [court] papers and has come to the conclusion that there is no iota of evidence linking Kademaunga to the alleged crime. To that end she has been released," her lawyer said.
Police said that Kademaunga was implicated in the attack on three complainants which occurred at the corner of Boshoff Drive and Seke Road near Metro Peech in Harare on August 23, 2023.
They added that the suspects drove off in a Toyota Mark X vehicle belonging to the legislator.
