HARARE – Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has appointed Walter Chawaguta as the interim head coach for the Zimbabwe senior men’s national cricket team. This is in preparation for their white-ball tour to Sri Lanka in January 2024.
Chawaguta will spearhead a technical team that includes Stuart Matsikenyeri as the Assistant Coach and Batting Coach, Steve Kirby as the Bowling Coach, and Erick Chauluka as the Fielding Coach.
The team also comprises Walter Karimanzira, the Fitness and Conditioning Trainer, Amato Machikicho, the Physiotherapist, Alistair Chambe, the Team Doctor, and Mufaro Chiturumani, the Analyst.
Darlington Majonga will serve dual roles as the team manager and media manager. Lovemore Banda has been appointed as the logistics manager.
“Chawaguta is not new to his latest role, having served as Zimbabwe’s Head Coach in 2008,” ZC said in a statement.
It added, “Currently, he is in charge at provincial first-class side Tuskers, while he has also been involved over the years as batting consultant for the Zimbabwe Senior Women’s National team.”
Chawaguta’s appointment comes after Dave Houghton was compelled to resign.
This was due to a string of disappointing results that led to the Chevrons missing out on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Zimbabwe is scheduled to face Sri Lanka in three ODI matches on 6, 8, and 11 January. Following this, the two sides will compete in T20I fixtures on 14, 16, and 18 January.
All matches will be hosted at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.
