KINGSTONE ZIMUNYA
HARARE – A dismal start to 2024 for JBC in the Super Six Women’s Division has culminated in them throwing in the towel just two Gameweeks in.
The buck stops here—JBC Women quit HBA Super Six League |
In a circular dated 27 January 2024, Harare Basketball Association Secretary General Tinashe Nyamuziwa confirmed the Belvedere-based side’s withdrawal from the Super Six Women’s Division, citing “financial difficulties.”
The statement continues;
“This is in line with the HBA Constitutional Provisions-Articles 3.1;3.4 and 29.2 which state that:
3.1 Develop and control the sport of basketball in the province of Harare. To promote, supervise and manage basketball in Harare, taking into account its universal, educational, cultural and humanitarian impact by establishing youth and development programs.
“3.2 To control the participation of male and female basketball in all aspects and for all age categories by the adoption of necessary or recommended measures in order to prevent any violation of the Statutes, Regulations or the decisions of BUZ, FIBA and FIBA Africa while embracing all the rules of the game.
“29.2 Between the sessions of the Congress, the Executive Committee holds all its competencies mentioned under Article 27. These decisions shall be submitted to the Congress for ratification at its closest meeting.”
In order to ensure continuity of the League, the HBA has decided to offer JBC’s slot to the current log leaders of the Harare A League Women’s Division, Blades.
Blades will assume the JBC slot as per current Super Six League standings and fulfil the remaining fixtures as provided for in the Super Six master fixture.
In a letter seen by ZimSphere Sports, JBC alluded that the decision to withdraw from the Super Six was not made based on a single factor, but rather a combination of factors.
These include the sanctioning of players on the JBC roaster earlier in the season, and the subsequent inadequacy of resources to find replacements.
JBC General Manager Rumbidzai Muzopa could not be immediately reached for comment at the time of publishing.
