HARARE – In a remarkable display of bravery, two young siblings, Peace and Luckmore Magaya, aged 10 and 12 respectively, successfully thwarted a crocodile attack on their mother in Mhondoro, a rural area west of Harare in Zimbabwe.
Their courage has earned them the admiration of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who personally met with the children on Saturday, 2 March, to commend the two “brave young heroes” for their fearless heroic acts.

“Today I met two brave young heroes, Peace and Luckmore Magaya, from Mhondoro,” Mnangagwa announced in a statement. “They saved their mother from a crocodile attack,” he added, saying he was inspired by the heroism.
In recognition of their valiant act, the president has pledged to cover their education fees and awarded them a token of appreciation of $5,000 each.
“Inspired by the their courage, I've taken on their education fees and awarded them $5,000 each. Let's nurture such bravery and compassion in our youth,” the president said.

Crocodile attacks are a frequent occurrence in Zimbabwe.
Earlier this year, Mr Tinashe Farawo, head of corporate communications at the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), warned people about the dangers of approaching water bodies known to be crocodile habitats.
“We want to plead with the people to avoid human-wildlife conflict by staying away from sources of water that might be habitats for crocodiles,” Farawo advised.
He revealed that last year alone, approximately 50 lives were lost to crocodile attacks, while 85 individuals survived but sustained injuries.
