HARARE – Assistant Commissioner Jeremiah Murenje, a top official with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), died in a car accident on April 6 along the Harare-Denda Road.
Murenje, 60, was the Director of the CID Law and Order Division at the CID Headquarters.
Murenje, known by his liberation war name David Rujeko MuZimbabwe, has been declared a provincial hero for his contributions to the country's liberation struggle.
"The late Jeremiah Murenje... has been declared a Provincial Hero and will be buried at Manyeve Farm Plot 7 Concession, Mashonaland Central Province on 10th April 2024 at around 1100 hours," said Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesperson.
Nyathi confirmed Murenje's death and conveyed the condolences of Commissioner-General of Police, Tandabantu Godwin Matanga, to the Murenje family.
Murenje joined the liberation struggle in 1976, crossing into Mozambique through the Rupinda Area in Manicaland. He received military training at Chimoio's Takawira Base.
In 1977, Murenje was seriously injured during an attack on their base and was taken to Mupai in Tete Province with other wounded comrades, later moving to Matenje Camp.
