HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have released details about the victims of the building collapse in Harare's Central Business District (CBD) that occurred yesterday. The incident resulted in one fatality and six injuries.
Police National Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, stated that the incident took place near the Gulf Complex on Chinhoyi Street on April 6, 2024, around 15:30 hours.
The victims were seeking shelter from a hailstorm on the building's pavement when the collapse occurred.
The deceased has been identified by her next of kin as Yolanda Hodzi from Maridale, Norton.
The injured, who are currently receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, include Kudzaishe Mafauna (20) from Ushewekunze, Harare; Trywell Leadmore from Adlean, Westgate, Harare; Wadzanai Baureni from Waterfalls, Harare; Brendon Madondo from Unit K, Chitungwiza; and Conilias Chiwaka (41) from Ruwa.
Three vehicles parked in front of the building were also damaged: a Mazda 323 (registration number AAW 5934), a Toyota Probox (registration number AGE 8052), and a Toyota Spade (registration number AGN 6805). The cost of the damage is yet to be determined, according to Nyathi.
Nyathi stated that investigations are underway in collaboration with the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) to find out the cause of the tragedy.
