HARARE – A 23-year-old woman from Gokwe was sentenced to 10 years in jail on Monday after pleading guilty to selling her two-day-old infant son.
Pauline Maganga sold the baby to an accomplice on June 26, 2022, two days after giving birth in Johannesburg, South Africa, prosecutor Tendai Tapi told the court.
The accomplice smuggled the infant into Zimbabwe in October. She was arrested on Nov. 27 after a tip-off and the baby was placed in the care of social welfare authorities, Tapi said.
Maganga was arrested on returning to Zimbabwe after learning of her accomplice's arrest.
In jailing Maganga, magistrate Lazini Ncube said that while she had argued she was struggling to survive, selling the infant was unlawful.
Maganga told the court she had sold the baby for 25,000 South African rand and received part of the payment.
She said the man who impregnated her had abandoned her and she could not make ends meet during pregnancy.
