HARARE – The Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ) has barred 10 legal practitioners from practicing due to failure to renew their practicing certificates and other reasons, the LSZ said in a statement.
The barred lawyers are prohibited from appearing before any court, police station, or prison on behalf of clients until they renew their practicing certificates.
They have not been issued 2024 certificates, which indicate that the trust accounts of law firms have been audited and found compliant with the Legal Practitioners Act.
For the deregistered lawyers, the LSZ said "they are no longer entitled to do any legal work on behalf of the public. Members of the public are warned from engaging them to do any legal services on their behalf".
The LSZ listed the lawyers who had not renewed their certificates by the end of last month and those who have been deregistered.
Lawyers who failed to renew their certificates include:
•Godwin Muunganirwa of Muunganirwa and Company
•Hazel M. Makonese of Khuphe Chijara and Makonese Attorneys
•Four unattached lawyers: Esther Makoni, Jairus Mutsekwa, Munashe Nyengera, and Tungamirai Nyengera
The four deregistered lawyers are:
•Doreen Vundhla-Phulu of Vundhla-Phulu and Partners
•Brighton Ndove of Ndove and Associates
•Liberty Mandiveyi (unattached)
•Muyengwa E. Motsi of Me Motsi and Associates
Vundhla-Phulu, the wife of newly appointed Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Senator Kacaca Phulu, faces accusations of defrauding clients out of properties and money.
The LSZ advised those owed money by Vundhla-Phulu or Ndove to approach the respective curators of their law firms.
"Furthermore, those persons who are owed money by Mrs. Doreen Vundhla-Phulu are advised to approach the curator Mr. V. Majoko of Majoko and Majoko Legal Practitioners while those who are owed money by Mr. Brighton Ndove are advised to approach a curator Mr. Job Sibanda of Job Sibanda and Associates," the LSZ said.
