2024 Zim PSL Matchday 20 Review: Title hopes fade away for Highlanders; Discipline still a problem for PSL sides

TAWANDA CHARI

Simba Bhora secured a vital 2-1 victory over Highlanders in a Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premiership Matchday 20 encounter at Wadzanai Stadium on Wednesday. The win propels the Shamva-based side into second place, showcasing their resilience to bounce back from a goal down.

Highlanders took the lead in the 21st minute through Marvelous Chigumira. Simba Bhora's Tymon Machope had earlier hit the woodwork, setting the stage for an intense battle.

Machope found the equalizer in the 36th minute amidst controversy, as Highlanders protested the goal, claiming offside.

The protests resulted in a red card for Highlanders assistant coach Agent Sawu.

The match-winning goal came in the second half when Walter Musona scored, despite having another goal disallowed for offside later in the game.

Dynamos, Yadah share spoils as FC Platinum stumble in title race

Dynamos and Yadah played to a 1-1 draw at Rufaro Stadium. Despite trailing for much of the match after Evans Rusike's 30th-minute goal, Dynamos managed to salvage a point with a late equalizer from Valentine Kadonzvo in the 88th minute.

Dynamos goalkeeper Martin Mapisa delivered a stellar performance, making crucial saves to keep his side in the game.

FC Platinum's title hopes took a hit with a 2-0 defeat to Chicken Inn at Luveve Stadium. Second-half goals from Mpumelelo Bhebhe and Genius Mutungamiri secured the victory for the Gamecocks, leaving FC Platinum to regroup after a disappointing outing.

In other matches, Chegutu Pirates and Manica Diamonds ended in a goalless draw, rounding off a week of closely contested encounters in the Castle Lager Premiership.

Discipline still a problem for PSL Sides

On top of Highlanders protesting a goal, at Bata Stadium, Greenfuel edged Telone 1-0 in a match marred by a lengthy stoppage as well.

Greenfuel's early lead, courtesy of Donald Ngoma's 3rd-minute goal, was threatened by a late penalty awarded to Telone.

However, the visitors managed to deny Telone from the spot and preserved their lead.

Elsewhere, Ngezi Platinum and ZPC Kariba played out a goalless draw, with both sides struggling to find the net.

Similarly, Bikita Minerals and CAPS United failed to break the deadlock, ending their match 0-0.

Dominic Chungwa's early goal ensured Hwange's 1-0 victory over Bulawayo Chiefs, while Herentals suffered a 1-2 defeat to Arenel Movers.
