NORTON – Five police officers have been charged with murder after allegedly taking turns to beat a woman, leading to her death, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) reported.

Gerald Mupandawana Makore (38), Nicola Kadonzvo (28), Judith Mangando (45), Tafadzwa Gerald Madzima (22), and Tavonga Munoda (21) appeared before the Norton Magistrates' Court on Friday to face murder charges.

According to the State, the incident occurred on July 17, 2024, at Plot 26 Parl, Selous. The victim, Ruvimbo Kamugwala, was assigned to clean the house of the second accused, Kadonzvo.

Later that day, Kadonzvo discovered that USD 100 was missing and accused Kamugwala of theft.

In response, Kadonzvo, along with Makore and Mangando, began interrogating Kamugwala. The three allegedly assaulted her with switches, electric cables, and open hands.

The situation escalated when Makore and Kadonzvo sought assistance from local police officers, Madzima and Munoda.

Madzima and Munoda, who are police officers, allegedly handcuffed Kamugwala and beat her with a button stick. Kamugwala admitted to stealing the money, claiming she had given it to a friend, who denied the allegation.

She then claimed to have hidden the money at home, but no money was found.

The police officers continued the assault before leaving Kamugwala in the custody of Makore, Kadonzvo, and Mangando.

The following morning, Kamugwala died as Makore and Kadonzvo were dragging her to consult a prophet.

The accused have been remanded in custody until August 1, 2024, and have been advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
