Fraud-accused Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu denied bail

HARARE—Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu were denied bail on Tuesday by the Harare Magistrates Court, facing charges of fraud for allegedly embezzling $7 million from a Presidential Pass On Scheme.

Harare regional magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa cited concerns that the defendants might interfere with investigations and witnesses.

"In as much as this is not yet a trial, the accused were supposed to offer a meaningful defence. They do not have a plausible defence. They also failed to tender documentary evidence to prove that their company documents were legitimate," Gofa said.

Gofa highlighted that Chimombe and Mpofu were a flight risk due to their connections outside the country and expressed fears that they might reoffend. 

“The duo might reoffend or flee to other countries," Gofa stated, adding that their release could potentially trigger public protests. "There are no bail conditions that alleviate these fears. Bail is denied."

Chimombe and Mpofu are scheduled to reappear in court on August 7 for their trial date.
