Ngezi Platinum Stars to play CAF Champions League match at Zambia’s Heroes Stadium

Defending Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions, Ngezi Platinum Stars, will use Zambia’s Heroes Stadium in Lusaka as their temporary home ground for the upcoming CAF Champions League.

This move comes as a result of the absence of a CAF-certified stadium in Zimbabwe capable of hosting international competitions.

Ngezi Platinum Stars will host AS Miniema of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in their preliminary match on August 16 in Lusaka, before traveling to the DRC for the second leg the following week.

The club’s chief executive officer Amanda Lieti confirmed the move, telling Zimpapers Sports, “We are pleased to announce that Ngezi Platinum Stars FC will be hosting its home matches at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, Zambia.”

“Due to our local stadia not meeting the required homologation standards, we explored alternative options and settled on Zambia, given its proximity to Zimbabwe.”

Ngezi Platinum will make their second appearance in the African continental club competition, having previously represented Zimbabwe in the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup.

Ahead of the 2024/25 CAF Champions League campaign, which kicks off next month, the Mhondoro-based club has made several additions to bolster their squad.

These include the signings of Tinotenda Meke and Malvern Hativagone, two standout players from the local Zimbabwean league, from GreenFuel and Bulawayo Chiefs respectively.

The team, coached by Takesure Chirwagi, has also added Tanaka Munemo, a graduate of the Real Betis Academy, and Blessed Mushonganyika from Legends Academy.
