Prosecutor in court facing bribery allegations

ZIMSPHERE

BULAWAYO – Bhekimpilo Moyo, a 35-year-old public prosecutor, appeared before the Bulawayo Tredgold Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, facing allegations of bribery.

The State alleges that on July 10, 2024, Moyo, while on duty at the Bulawayo Tredgold Magistrates' Court, was prosecuting a ‘Malicious Damage to Property’ case involving the brother of the complainant, whose name has not been disclosed.

According to the prosecution, Moyo approached the complainant and her brother, leading them to his office where he demanded a US$200 bribe to ensure a non-custodial sentence for the complainant's brother.

Moyo allegedly warned that failure to pay the bribe would result in a sentence of 10 to 25 years for the brother.

The State claims that Moyo received US$50 on the same day, with the remaining US$150 paid the following day.

Subsequently, Moyo allegedly demanded an additional US$250, which the complainant was unable to provide.

The complainant recorded the conversation on her phone and reported the incident to the police, leading to Moyo's arrest.

The case continues.
