KAMPALA – The Zimbabwe senior men's rugby team displayed a dominant showing when they defeated old foes Namibia by a score of 32-10 in Uganda on Wednesday to progress to the Rugby Africa Cup final.
The victory saw the Sables registering their first win over Namibia, ranked 24th in the world, since 2001.
The Sables will face Algeria in the final on Sunday in what promises to be an explosive encounter.
Zimbabwe went into the game with the singular intention of proving their dominance and mental strength over Namibia. By halftime, Zimbabwe, ranked 30th, was leading Namibia 14-3.
Zimbabwe's strength lay in its precise kicking, strong scrum, and swift backline moves; ultimately overwhelming their opponents.
The victory provides some much-needed momentum for Zimbabwe's plans in growing its prowess on the continent.
Sables coach Piet will definitely look forward to utilizing success in the Rugby Africa Cup as a gigantic leap towards 2027 World Cup qualification, as the winners of this tournament will proceed to the final round of the global qualifiers.
“Every game is a new opportunity and, while history counts for something, we must use that as a motivation to achieve something that many Sables sides have not achieved for over 20 years,” said Benade before the game against Namibia.
The Rugby Africa Cup is a biennial men's rugby union tournament involving the top 16 African nations based on their World Rugby rankings. It is organised by Rugby Africa. This year's competition drew attention to emerging rugby nations including Senegal, Burkina Faso, Uganda (the hosts), and Cote D'Ivoire.
