Bail denied for detained activists Kwekweza, Chere, and Gwenzi

HARARE  — Bail has been denied for pro-democracy activists Namatai Kwekweza, Robson Chere, and Samuel Gwenzi by the Harare Magistrates Court, heightening concerns over Zimbabwe's ongoing crackdown on dissent.

Their arrest and subsequent pretrial incarceration has been viewed in the broader context of Zimbabwe's clampdown on dissenters as the country is hosting the 44th SADC Summit.

The activists were arrested on July 31 after being forcibly removed from a plane. They face charges of disorderly conduct for allegedly protesting at the Harare Magistrates Court.

Their demonstration called for the release of jailed Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) interim leader Jameson Timba and other opposition figures.

In denying the three bail, Magistrate Ruth Moyo cited the accused's propensity to commit further offences and incite public unrest if freed. She also highlighted concerns about possible witness interference, which could jeorpadise ongoing investigations.

The dramatic arrest, which included a fourth individual, Vusumuzi Sibanda, attracted widespread concern. The activists were en route to a conference in Victoria Falls when they were removed from a domestic flight and detained.

Their legal team reports that following their arrest, the activists were detained for extended periods, denied access to legal counsel, and subjected to alleged torture.
