Husband strangles wife over ice cream dispute

ZIMSPHERE

HWANGE – A 47-year-old man from Hwange appeared before the Hwange Magistrates' Court on charges of physical abuse, following a violent altercation over an ice cream purchase, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).

On June 29, 2024, at around 10:00 AM, the complainant, a 44-year-old woman, requested her husband to buy ice cream for their daughter. The husband, who remains unnamed, responded by claiming he had no money, which sparked a heated argument.

The situation quickly escalated, culminating in the husband allegedly strangling his wife with his bare hands.

He only released her and fled the scene when alerted by approaching neighbors.

The court sentenced the accused to a fine of US$400, payable by August 30, 2024, or a default imprisonment of three months.

An additional three months' imprisonment was wholly suspended for five years.

The NPAZ called on the public "to desist from violence and resolve their disputes amicably or seek third party mediation".
