Laughter prescription: Doc Vikela’s comedy show set to thrill

HARARE – Anticipation is rising for the much-awaited Just What the Doctor Ordered stand-up comedy show, headlined by the renowned Doc Vikela, born Victor Tinashe Mpofu. The event is scheduled for September 6 at the 7 Arts Theatre, with the comedic talents of Andrew Manyika as host.

In a conversation with ZimSphere, Doc Vikela expressed his eagerness to connect with audiences through his comedic insights. 

"Just What The Doctor Ordered has been a long time coming," he stated. 

"I have a lot on my mind that I feel I could share with people. This special is unique, and I want everyone who gets tickets to be ready—it's going to be madness, madness, and total madness."

He intimated, "No sacred cows. I'm not holding back. It's gonna be fun, it's gonna be hilarious, and obviously, we're going to have one or two opening acts. It's like people are going to come to witness The Mona Lisa."

Beyond this show, Doc Vikela has plans for performances across Zimbabwe, gearing up for a broader tour across the SADC region, Europe, and the United States next year. 

"We're doing Gweru on August 10, Masvingo on September 28, and Mutare in October, among others. These shows are building up to our consolidated tour for next year."

Doc Vikela, who began his comedic journey in 2009, shared his inspiration: "I always enjoyed making people laugh from a young age. This is something that comes naturally to me, and I realized a gap I wanted to fill—to make sure people enjoy and appreciate laughter."

He emphasised comedy's societal impact, noting, "Comedy provokes and invokes conversations and debates around key issues and societal norms."

Definitely, the Just What the Doctor Ordered show promises an evening filled with laughter and reflection, an experience not to be missed.
