BEITBRIDGE – A significant drug bust in Beitbridge has led to the arrest of Melusi Ngwenya, a 26-year-old from Mbedzi, who appeared in court for unlawful possession of dangerous drugs. Ngwenya was found with a staggering 9,822 kg of marijuana, valued at ZWG132,508.

The arrest took place on September 27, 2024, during a police operation dubbed "No to Illegal Cross Borders" at Dulibadzimu Bus Terminus, Beitbridge.
Security officers noticed Ngwenya carrying luggage wrapped in black plastic, prompting a search which revealed four cobs of dagga hidden among chicken cuts.
Subsequently, Ngwenya was taken into custody and his trial is set for October 7, 2024.
In a related case, two women from Harare—Tamary Mutote, 37, and Lilian Ngwarati, 25—were also brought before the Beitbridge Magistrates' Court. They faced charges for possessing unregistered medicine, violating the Medicines and Allied Substance Control Act.
On July 24, 2024, police received a tip-off about the duo's illegal activities at a bus stop in Beitbridge. Upon investigation, officers found them with five shrink-wrapped boxes containing 24 boxes of Broncleer cough syrup, valued at ZIG 88,8000.
The medicine was confiscated, and both women were fined USD200 each, with a potential five-month imprisonment if unpaid.
Additionally, they received a 19-month sentence, with four months suspended for three years, and the remaining 15 months suspended on the condition of completing 425 hours of community service.
Zimbabwe has been battling a surge in substance abuse cases; as illegal inflows of the drugs continue unabated.
