HARARE—Stand-up comedian Ngoni "Vicaldo" Mukahanana is set to deliver laughter and thought-provoking insights with his new show, The Return of the Preacher Man, at Batanai Gardens on October 11.
Speaking with ZimSphere, Vicaldo expressed his excitement and anticipation for the upcoming performance.
"Fans must expect to be highly entertained," he stated, emphasising the therapeutic power of comedy.
"Comedy brings a big distraction to what can cause stress to us as humans. It creates an atmosphere that your body needs to reboot, so fans can surely expect that."
Vicaldo aims to engage the audience in a unique way.
"I want people to come out and experience comedy within themselves," he said.
"Thought-provoking phrases that will make them bite their tongue. My comedy merely makes people realize what they know already but just in a new light, hence the COMEDY IS ALREADY IN YOUR DNA."
Reflecting on his journey, Vicaldo shared, "I started comedy sometime in mid-2021 doing skits. I would take a storyline from the Bible and act it out, and on 21 February 2022, I then did my first stand-up comedy show."
His material is predominantly inspired by spirituality. "My comedy is 80% mostly Bible stories, my journey with God, church or churches, or anything that relates to spirituality."
Vicaldo believes in the positive impact of comedy on society.
"Like instead of worrying about problems, we can in turn laugh at the problems. Not everyone or everything has to be a joke, but jokes do have a positive impact on people mentally."
He credits his passion for comedy to role models like Trevor Noah, King Kandoro, and Nijo.
"Comedians I look up to, for me it started with Trevor Noah. He made me love comedy as a teen in high school," Vicaldo revealed.
The comedian was particularly inspired by Tinashe Thisisit. "I went to one of his shows towards the end of 2021, and it changed a lot. I gained confidence that this is possible."
As Vicaldo prepares for what he anticipates will be his best performance yet, he invites audiences to join him for an evening of humor and reflection.
"This will be my biggest one, so indeed come watch it live," he concluded.
