HARARE – Zimdancehall and NAMA award-winning superstar Emegy Sylvester Chizanga, who is mostly known by his stage name Freeman HKD, is set to launch his 13th album titled Me vs Me as well as the first edition of the HKD Festival on 26 October at Alex Sports Club in Harare.
The inaugural HKD Festival will feature many superstars including Voltz JT, Poptain, Feli Nandi, Delroy, Seh Calaz, Master H, Tamy Moyo, Takura, Nyasha David, Nutty O, Holy Ten, among others. The festival comes at a time when the Zimbabwean music industry is being embraced by many fans, and this serves to shine a light on the notable artists currently topping charts.
Speaking with ZimSphere, Freeman said the name of the upcoming album Me vs Me was inspired by him competing with himself and embracing his flaws to create beautiful, relatable art.
“The name of the upcoming album Me vs Me was inspired by me competing with myself, embracing my flaws, me being in my own lane,” Freeman said.
“It is Me vs Me trying to find a balance between my heart and my head.”
Freeman said the upcoming album has a lot of Afro-fusion and Afro-pop in it, yet still retains the original essence of Freeman's old self—and that it took him about a year to create the album.
“There is a lot of Afro-Fusion, Afro-pop in this upcoming album and you will hear a bit of the old Freeman even.
“The album took slightly over a year to create, there are some songs l started some time back and l came back to them now, some l created just a few months ago.
“I don’t really have a process of writing this one, my team and I had some ideas we put together sounds and producers who could do that and we did it.
“Huge shout out to Shamex and Tama and my team as a whole for making this happen.”
Comparing the upcoming album with the last one – Trophy album – Freeman said the quality of Me vs Me is something out of this world.
“Comparing Me vs Me against my last album Trophy shows that the quality on this one is out of this world,” he remarked.
“Trophy album was good, but on this one the quality of the production and vocal is crazy, huge shout out to Nelit for that.”
The upcoming album will have a sizeable number of tracks, with Freeman saying the track number four is his favourite and it is a heartfelt dedication to his wife.
“The upcoming album has many tracks and collaborations which l cannot reveal to the public yet but the song on track number 4 has to be one of my favorites.
“It’s dedicated to my wife – it’s also her favourite, no surprise there.
“I wrote it from the heart and on this one I even used my local chikorekore dialect; be sure to check it out when it comes out—track number 4,” he said.
He also said fans can contribute to the success of the album by streaming and consuming the products once released, intimating that the success of the project will definitely be measured by the numbers.
“Fans can contribute to the album’s success by streaming and consuming the products and we will continue to put it out.
“I am currently on tour already but the official album tour starts after the launch.
“So by coming in their numbers to all my shows, this will be the biggest contribution my fans can give towards this movement.
“Also, numbers will measure the album’s success and I hope to surpass the numbers I had on Trophy album, which to date is my highest streaming album.

Freeman started his journey in 2009 and his hit Joina City was his major breakthrough recorded by Dj Staira. He released his first album Tapinda Mustaira in 2011. Ever since, he has been unrelenting in delivering quality, chart-topping albums, and he has gone to become one of the most beloved household names in the Zimbabwean music industry.
