"Don't spread speculation," ZRP says, as it is working with SAPS and Interpol to track the $4 million bank robbers

BULAWAYO – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it is now in the process of working with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Interpol to track the $4 million that was stolen during a robbery at an Ecobank branch in Bulawayo last week, and has urged the public to refrain from speculation.

Speaking to journalists in Bulawayo, ZRP said it is escalating investigations of the case; with the Officer Commanding Bulawayo province Commissioner Wiklef Makamache saying top detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have been able to engage law enforcement "from the other side of the border".

"We are still pursuing the matter. Once we are done with the investigations, we will bring the cake to you for consumption," Commissioner Makamache said.

He called on the public not to speculate about the robbers' whereabouts or their fate. This, in the context of social media rumours which spread last week that the robbers had been apprehended, with some false reports saying there was a shootout between the robbers and the police.

"Please don't speculate, because others were speculating for the wrong reasons. Some were already indicating that these robbers have been shot dead. Some were suggesting that it was done in Plumtree, some were already saying the recovery rate was that of $20,000 and the rest is nowhere to be found," Makamache said.

"But the truth of the matter is our investigation process is still ongoing. Our teams are right on the ground, from day one. We've got quite a number of teams that are on the ground. And we're looking forward to apprehending the culprits.

"So for now please don't speculate. Let's shape our discussion so that we dish out correct and accurate information to the public"
