Mutare housemaids sentenced for stealing $26,000 from employer

MUTARE – Two housemaids from Mutare, Ntandoyenkosi Sibanda (32), from Chikanga, and Ashley Munyaradzi Matika (20), from Dangamvura were convicted and sentenced for theft by the Mutare Magistrates Court. after they stole $26,000 from their employer.

The incident occurred on July 11, 2024. Sibanda and Matika, who were employed as domestic workers, stole a cash box containing $26,000 from their employer's bedroom. The duo reportedly shared the stolen money between themselves.

The crime was discovered the following day when the employer noticed the missing cash and promptly reported the matter to the police. 

Investigations led to the arrest of Sibanda and Matika, and authorities were able to recover the cash box along with $7,800 in remaining funds.

In court, the two were sentenced to 36 months imprisonment, with parts of the sentence suspended. 

Six months of the sentence were suspended outright, while an additional 12 months were suspended on the condition that they provide restitution. 

The remaining prison time was replaced by a requirement for each to complete 630 hours of community service.
