MUTARE – A 35-year-old man from Mutare has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after being convicted of raping his 15-year-old neighbor, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).
On August 30, 2024, the accused visited the complainant's home under the pretense of looking for her brother. Finding only the complainant and her younger brother at home, he offered them juice, which caused both to feel dizzy.
Later, when he returned, the accused attempted to forcibly grab the complainant. She managed to escape to her parents' bedroom, but he pursued her, covering her mouth with a pillow and removing her clothes before raping her.
The assault ended abruptly when the sound of the complainant's father's motorbike prompted the accused to flee, leaving behind his shorts, shirt, and leather jacket.
Returning later, the accused falsely accused the siblings of stealing his clothes and mobile phone. The complainant's father, believing the accusation, assaulted her.
She fled to her mother, who was attending a funeral, and disclosed the incident.
Following a police report, the accused was arrested. He was convicted and received a 20-year sentence, with two years suspended, leaving him to serve 18 years effectively.
