ZIMSPHERE

HARARE – Following the fire that ravaged much of the market in Mbare, a security guard appeared in court to answer for allegedly causing the fire. Action Chakauya, 35, faces charges of negligently causing serious damage to property under Section 141 of the Criminal Law (Codification And Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) confirmed his arrest and court appearance.

The fire, which occurred on October 8, 2024, resulted in the destruction of the Mbare Musika Retail Market. According to the State, Chakauya, while on duty at premises opposite the market, allegedly set a fire to warm himself.

This fire reportedly spiralled out of control, razing the market and causing damages valued at US$5,000,000.

Police investigations swiftly led to Chakauya’s arrest. The complainants in this case are the Mbare Musika Retailers, who have suffered significant losses.

Chakauya is scheduled to return to court on October 21 for a bail ruling.

In the aftermath of the calamity, President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared a state of disaster. The government has since pledged to rebuild the market with improved safeguards to prevent such tragedies in the future.
