Security guard denied bail over devastating Mbare Market fire

ZIMSPHERE 

HARARE – A security guard accused of causing a catastrophic fire at Mbare Market has been denied bail. Action Chakauya, 35, appeared before the Mbare Magistrates' Court facing charges of negligently causing serious damage to property under Section 141 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

Chakauya is alleged to have started the fire on October 8, 2024, while on duty at premises opposite the Mbare Musika Retail Market. According to the charges, he lit a fire at one of the main entrances to warm himself, which then spiraled out of control, devastating the market.

The fire resulted in significant losses to the Mbare Musika Retailers, with damages estimated at US$5,000,000. 

Following police investigations, Chakauya was apprehended and brought before the court.

Chakauya is set to reappear in court on November 5, 2024.
