HARARE – The Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premier Soccer League is one where expectations often do not weigh heavy. After defeating traditional giants CAPS United—known among fans as dzetse or datya, meaning “bullfrog”—the Shamva-based club is now just four points away from clinching the prestigious Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title. A 2-1 victory on Matchday 31, courtesy of goals from Vasile Kawe and Tymon Machope, extended their lead to a massive nine points over second-placed FC Platinum. This was no ordinary feat; it was a declaration of intent from a team that finished 12th last season and was barely expected to be title contenders.
Simba Bhora’s rise to the top has been nothing short of miraculous, especially considering the journey they’ve had. Their stats speak volumes about their consistency: 19 wins, 6 draws, and 6 losses, with 38 goals scored and 21 conceded. With a goal-scoring rate of 1.22 per game and a defense that allows just about one goal every two matches. Their top scorer in the league, Tymon Machope only found the net 11 times and the second highest scorer, Mthokozidi Msebe only managing 6.
These statistics also shed light on the overall offensive struggles within the league, as even the top teams seem to be grappling with finding the back of the net.
The Wadzanayi Stadium has been a fortress for Simba Bhora. Since being approved for Premier Soccer League matches in March, the club has been unbeaten at home, recording an impressive 13 wins and three draws. This formidable home record has been the backbone of their title challenge, establishing Wadzanayi as one of the most challenging places to visit for opposing teams.
The win against CAPS United was far from straightforward, as Simba Bhora had to dig deep. Reduced to 10 men in the 55th minute, their 1-0 lead quickly evaporated just four minutes later. Yet, in a display of grit and determination, they found the magic to restore their lead and move closer to the title.
Looking ahead, Simba Bhora’s path to securing the title seems within reach. They will first face relegated Arenel Movers in Bulawayo, a match that could bring them within a single point of glory.
They will then return to their fortress to host FC Platinum in a highly anticipated clash at Wadzanayi. The season finale against ZPC Kariba promises to be a tough encounter, yet Simba Bhora’s current form suggests they could have the title wrapped up before then.
