Mother charged for murder of two daughters after drowning them

ZIMSPHERE

CHIREDZI – A 25-year-old woman from Triangle, Blessing Chiromonye, appeared in the Chiredzi Magistrates' Court on charges of murdering her two daughters by drowning them in a canal, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) is reporting.

According to court documents, Chiromonye is accused of throwing her daughters, aged 4 and 8, into the main water canal in Triangle on January 8, 2025. The children drowned, resulting in their deaths.

The prosecution alleges that after the incident, Chiromonye attempted to take her own life by jumping into the same canal. However, she was reportedly ejected by the water and survived. Following her failed suicide attempt, Chiromonye returned home, changed her wet clothes, and attempted to flee the area.

Her escape was thwarted when the driver of a commuter omnibus she boarded was tipped off about the incident. The driver transported her back to the scene, where a police report was subsequently filed, leading to her arrest.

Chiromonye has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on January 23, 2025.
