HARARE – Rising Zimbabwean comedian Obey Tinashe Ngorima, popularly known as MC Scala, is set to deliver an evening of laughter and reflection as he headlines 'The Journey' comedy night on April 5 at Batanai Gardens.
Speaking with ZimSphere, MC Scala promised audiences an engaging night filled with humor and personal anecdotes about his comedy career.
"We are performing stand-up comedy on April 5, titled 'The Journey', where we will be telling people about my journey into comedy," he said.
He elaborated that the show will chronicle his experiences, from joining Simuka Comedy to working with Mirazvo Productions and Talem Films, leading up to the present day.
"We will be telling people our journey—me and my friends—from joining Simuka Comedy to Mirazvo Productions, then Talem Films, up to this year," he added.
Beyond entertainment, Mc Scala emphasized that the night will also serve as a platform to discuss challenges hindering the growth of Zimbabwe’s comedy industry.
The local comedy scene gained international recognition last year when Learnmore Jonasi became a finalist on America's Got Talent (AGT). Jonasi wowed both judges and audiences with his unique blend of stand-up and physical comedy, deeply rooted in African humor. His journey was further cemented by receiving the prestigious Golden Buzzer from host Terry Crews, who had long been his childhood inspiration.
Jonasi’s success has shone a spotlight on Zimbabwean comedy, proving that the industry has immense potential for growth. Inspired by this, MC Scala believes more progress can be achieved and intends to share his insights on how to overcome industry barriers.
"We are going to talk about what is hindering our progress in comedy as an industry," he stated. "And we are also going to share what we think might be the remedy."
'The Journey' comedy night will feature a lineup of six acts, including three open mic performances, with Allen Skits serving as the host, headliner, and MC.
Comedian Chipenzi will kick off the show with the first set, followed by Gosh Vines in the second set, ensuring a night brimming with diverse comedic styles.
Born in 1999, MC Scala attended Sunningdale 1 Primary and Mushunje Primary in Mutare, later completing his high school education at Morgan High School in Harare (2012–2017).
His journey into comedy began in Form 3, when he actively participated in his school’s drama club as a scriptwriter. His scripts were consistently packed with humor, prompting his drama teacher to encourage him to try stand-up comedy—a decision that proved to be a turning point in his career.
Reflecting on the industry’s growth, Mc Scala remains optimistic about its future.
"The comedy industry in Zimbabwe is growing, yoh! From only two touring comedians to more than ten—wow, we are on our way!" he exclaimed.
With 'The Journey' comedy night, Mc Scala is not only set to entertain but also to inspire and contribute to the ongoing evolution of Zimbabwe’s comedy scene.
