Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League Matchday 5 Review: Ngezi Platinum outmuscle CAPS United, remain on top; Dynamos stumble; MWOS shine

TAWANDA CHARI

CAPS United’s season has gone from bad to worse as they slumped to a second consecutive defeat, this time at the hands of Ngezi Platinum. The Green Machine now find themselves alarmingly parked in the relegation zone, sixteenth on the table, a position that mirrors the team’s disjointed form.

Ngezi, who started the game cautiously, found the breakthrough just before the break and capitalized on their momentum in the second half.

Although CAPS drew level in the 68th minute through a composed finish by Eric Manokore, Ashwin Karengesha’s clinical response just four minutes later proved decisive. The 2-1 result saw Ngezi Platinum leapfrog back to the top of the league standings.

Dynamos tumble in Mutare

Dynamos’ unbeaten run came to an abrupt halt at Sakubva as they were edged 1-0 by Manica Diamonds. Donald Teguru’s sweetly struck volley in the 15th minute was the difference on the day, handing the Gem Boys a valuable home win and snapping the Glamour Boys' early-season momentum.

Despite the loss, Dynamos coach Lloyd Chigowe found solace in his team’s display, praising their flair and attacking intent—even as their inefficiency in front of goal cost them dearly. "We created plenty of chances and dominated possession, but the finishing just wasn’t there," he lamented.

Chigowe’s sentiments echoed a broader theme for Dynamos this season: promise, but not enough punch.

MWOS FC continue dream debut season

Few could have predicted that Norton-based MWOS FC would be one of the leaders of the Premier Soccer League after five rounds, but Lloyd Mutasa’s men have defied expectations. Their latest conquest—a gritty 1-0 win over ZPC Kariba, courtesy of Billy Vheremu’s first-half strike—extended their unbeaten run and solidifying their second spot at the top of the table with 11 points.

Their defensive record is nothing short of outstanding: just one goal conceded in five games. It’s early days but MWOS are playing like a team with no fear and more importantly, a side that knows how to grind out results.

Highlanders share spoils, Triangle get first point

At Gibbo Stadium, Triangle United finally opened their account this season with a 1-1 draw against Highlanders. The Sugar Boys had taken a surprising early lead in the 12th minute, only for Bosso to respond after the break. While the result keeps Triangle rooted at the bottom, it might serve as a turning point in their campaign.

Elsewhere in the league

Scottland FC, one of the season’s newcomers, impressed with a commanding 3-0 victory over Bikita Minerals — a result highlighted by goals from Walter Musona and Mthokozisi Msebe, alongside a gift-wrapped own goal from the visitors.

Defending champions Simba Bhora did just enough to dispatch TelOne 1-0, while Greenfuel edged Yadah by the same narrow margin. Meanwhile, fans at Mandava and Luveve were left frustrated as FC Platinum vs Kwekwe United and Chicken Inn vs Herentals both ended goalless.
