Zimbabwean workers exploited: LEAD President Linda Masarira demands justice and fair wages now

HARARE – Linda Tsungirirai Masarira, President of Labour Economists and Afrikan Democrats (LEAD), has issued a strong condemnation of the systemic exploitation of Zimbabwean workers, vowing to take immediate action against unfair labour practices plaguing the nation.  

"For too long," Masarira declared, "the very foundation of our nation—the hardworking Zimbabwean people—has been subjected to the indignity of unfair labour practices. We have witnessed a disturbing normalization of underpaid wages, the denial of rightfully earned salaries, the absence of fundamental employment contracts, and the arbitrary and often negligible compensation offered by employers. In the informal sector, this injustice often descends into the complete absence of payment for labour."  

LEAD has strongly denounced these illegal and unethical practices, which have persisted since 2007. Masarira also expressed deep disappointment in some trade unions, accusing them of failing to protect workers' rights, suggesting possible collusion with employers.  

"The consequences of this systemic labour abuse are devastating," Masarira emphasized. "Low productivity, rampant corruption, particularly within the civil service, and a disheartening decline in work ethic are the direct results of a workforce that feels undervalued, demotivated, and exploited. We cannot, and will not, build a prosperous and just Zimbabwe on the backs of such injustice."  

With Zimbabwe's economy struggling and workers burdened by slave wages and currency instability, Masarira condemned employers for exploiting job scarcity to further abuse labourers. 

"It is unconscionable that employers are compounding this suffering," she stated. "Every Zimbabwean worker deserves dignity, respect, and fair compensation for their labour."  

Starting this week, LEAD, under Masarira’s leadership, will launch a campaign to expose exploitative employers. 

"We will be a voice for the voiceless and a shield for the vulnerable," she affirmed. "LEAD will assist all those owed their hard-earned dues in their fight for justice. The era of silent suffering ends now. The time for accountability has come."  

LEAD has pledged unwavering solidarity with Zimbabwean workers, committing to advocate for a just society where labour rights are upheld and protected.
